RANCHO BERNARDO, Calif. -- There is plenty of rebuilding going on in Rancho Bernardo, but one construction site looks a little different.Back in October, the wildfires took Ken Baker's home, and now the ex-contractor is supervising the reconstruction."It's helping the recovery a lot. It's helping mentally in the recovery, because I know we're coming back with something better than we had," said Baker.
When Baker says better, he means bluer."It has a fire retardant in it, and in my estimation it's unburnable," said Baker.Baker is using BluWood, which is treated with a chemical called AF21 to make it more fire-resistant."We actually doused it with gas 7 times and it still wouldn't burn down. So, that sold me it's fireproof," said Baker.Baker said BluWood is also termite and mold resistant, which in the long-term make up for the $1.50 per foot higher price."We had our house tented before and I don't want to do that again. We had a water leak and had mold, and I don't want to have mold problems anymore," said Baker. For Baker, it was worth the extra upfront dollars. After two major wildfires in 6 years, he wants others to know there is an option that might be safer in the event of another fire.
