Drought-Tolerant Plants
Loren's Field Notes
Here's a list of drought-tolerant plants that will help keep your yard and garden looking great through the dry times. Calliandra is a great choice along walls and fences in most San Diego gardens west of the mountains. It is a fast grower that's easy to prune into fence-hiding or -enhancing shapes. It has very pretty bottlebrush-like blooms that hummingbirds love. Once established, it will get by on minimal water. Crape Myrtle (lagerstroemia indica) is a very showy tree or shrub that does best in the heat of our inland gardens. It is prone to mildew in coastal areas. Crape Myrtle is a deciduous tree that blooms profusely with purple or pink flowers in midsummer. It does well with only minimal water once established.
