"Twerk" is in our everyday vocabulary thanks to Miley Cyrus’s infamous performance at MTV’s VMAs, and now the word is on its way to the dictionary.
Oxford Dictionaries Online is including “twerk” in its latest update.
It defines “twerk” as a verb meaning to “dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”
Several other words were also added in the update, including selfie, digital detox, emoji, geek chic, and srsly.
A group of Scripps Ranch High School students who made a controversial "twerking" video earlier this year were suspended for two days and initially banned from going to the prom and graduation after the video went viral -- the punishment was later lifted but a sexual harassment charge was slated to be added to their school records.
Parents said the girls were told the video was for a school project and that they had no idea it would be edited in a vulgar way and uploaded to YouTube.
