Controversy over parents' wishes versus chemotherapy

Hospital wants to overrule Amish parents' decision

A hospital's move to force a 10-year-old Amish girl in Ohio to resume chemotherapy is raising questions about parents' rights in making medical decisions for their children.

Sarah Hershberger's parents say they stopped the cancer treatments because of its terrible effects on the girl.

Now Akron Children's Hospital wants a registered nurse to take over limited guardianship of Sarah and decide whether she will continue chemotherapy.

The hospital says Sarah's leukemia is very treatable but warn she would die within a year without chemotherapy.

The case is in the hands of a northeast Ohio judge.

Medical experts who follow these types of cases say courts most often will side with the doctors if they think the child's life is in danger and there's a good chance the treatments will work.
