Celebrities spur comeback of the fanny pack

TULSA - The accessory known for gracing grannies is prowling the catwalk.
"The name is bad, and unfortunately, I haven't seen a better name for it," said Amanda Viles of Saks Fifth Avenue.
Designers have called it a belted satchel or hands-free bag, but let's face it. It's that same nerdy tourist companion from the 1980s: the fanny pack.
"They did come back, but they're sleeker and they look a lot better now," said Viles.
Celebrities like Rihanna and Kanye West have been spotted wearing designer packs from Louis Vuitton and Gucci, and famed fashion stylist Rachel Zoe has said she is dying to bring the fanny packs back in style.
The average American teen has been seen wearing fanny packs more often. Not necessarily a designer brand, but rather more of the kitschy gift-store style.
You may thank old people for putting the kibosh on them the first time around, but Viles says you can blame technology (i.e. cell phones) for bringing them back.
"I think it's a designer's job to put out there what the consumer thinks is useful."
Here are some suggestions for rocking the modern fanny pack:
- Do not center the pack. Wear it on your hip.
- Wear it slightly loose.
- Don't be afraid to show personality in the fanny pack you choose.
- If you just can't tote the idea, try a small cross body bag and cinch the strap small enough to wear on your hip.
Try it! Live a little! Although, there will always be friends that wish you would bag it. If you're one of them, remember this fad, too, shall pass.
