Illiteracy is considered to be a nationwide crisis; 40 percent of adult Americans have trouble reading and writing even simple things. They cannot fill out a job application, read traffic signs, read the prescription on a medicine bottle or read a story to their child.
In San Diego County, it is estimated that more than 450,000 adults are lacking basic literacy skills.
We hope Lets Read San Diego will help create awareness in the community and offer fun ideas that will get everyone reading!
Viewer Pick of the Month
And the Good Brown Earth by Kathy Henderson
This book is recommended for children ages 6-8.
Author and illustrator Kathy Hendersons mixed media artwork adds humor and charm to this picture book. The book's central characters, Joe and Gram, are given the task of planting and cultivating a garden. Gram works methodically while Joe learns his horticulture -- each are aided by "the good brown earth". They dig in the fall, plan in the winter, plant in the spring, weed and water in summer and gather produce for a large feast in late summer. The repetition within the text adds to this books appeal.
This book was suggested by Johnny Follin of San Diego.
