10News Leadership Award Winners Larry And Tammy Hershfield
10News honors Larry and Tammy Hershfield, the Founder of Computers 2 SD Kids (C2SDK), a non-profit organization that provides computers for San Diego’s low-income families.Through exposure to other kids in their children’s school, Larry and Tammy realized that many children did not have access to a computer. As computers became more and more prevalent in schools and workplaces, it became clear that there were many children who lacked the economic means to purchase and maintain computers that they need to improve their educational experiences. Because more than a quarter of the population has limited or no access to a computer, Larry and Tammy decided to create a non-profit organization that would help disadvantaged children and their families obtain computers and related projects in order to help them with their education.Since its inception in 2004, C2SDK has expanded out of the founders’ home and moved into its own refurbishment center. Each year, C2SDK has placed about 1,000 computers into the homes of San Diego’s low-income families. Larry and Tammy work together with other organizations within the community to increase those numbers. If the organization reaches their goals of placing 3,000 computers with San Diego families this year, it will cost less than $30 per computer.
In order to reach their goals and further expand their program, C2SDK ask friends, family and supporters to sponsor a computer. In addition to financial donations, C2SDK accepts refurbished computers that can be dropped off at their warehouse. As President and Vice President of the Board, both Larry and Tammy remain incredibly involved in the operation of C2SDK and continue to make a difference in the lives of others by providing such an essential educational tool. For more information, please contact Computers 2 SD Kids at 858-395-5511 or visit www.computers2sdkids.org.
