10News Leadership Award Winner Beth Santangelo
10News honors Beth Santangelo for creating a reading course in the Pregnant Minors Program at Twain High School. The Pregnant Minors Program was established 10 years ago, and is now offered at both Twain and Garfield High School. It was designed to meet the academic needs of pregnant students. The Pregnant Minor Program is a state-funded alternative educational opportunity for any pregnant student in the district.Beth has taught the Pregnant Minor Program reading class exclusively at Twain High School for the past ten years. This class helps parents and their children improve their literary skills and self-confidence. Beth educates young parents how to select children’s books, how to use nursery rhymes and songs to prepare their child to become successful readers. She has also developed a scholarship program at Twain High School for students who plan to attend college. Although available for all students, this scholarship has been awarded to a young woman in the Pregnant Minors Program for the past two years.
Beth is currently retired, and her involvement with the Pregnant Minors Program is completely voluntary. She dedicates much of her time reaching out to students, volunteering with staff, and fundraising for the program. Approximately 300 students have enrolled in the class that Beth taught over the past ten years. For more information, please contact Mike Rood at 858-496-8260 or visit www2.sandi.net/twain.
