10News Leadership Award Winner Kathy Garzon
10News honors Kathy Garzon for giving a second chance to those in need. She helps homeless and recently incarcerated men re-establish themselves into the community by helping them get an education, write resumes and search for jobs. Kathy has been helping homeless and recently released men on her own for the past five years. Kathy has helped about 90 people become a positive part of society again. She shares her home with them while they are not able to support themselves on their own. She does everything possible for the men she assists get back to society and have normal lives again. In addition, she provides rules for those living with her for them to gain responsibility such as taking on household chores. Kathy has involved others in the community to help maintain this program. She gets support from local merchants to help her financially support those she cares for. Well known fast food chains provide her with extra food while other local businesses such as the tire business gives her discounts on tires, knowing that she uses her van to drive her residents to and from work.
Kathy’s volunteer work has proved so successful that the local state prison has asked her to take a number of their eligible parolees to change their lives for the better. Recently, she opened a new home to women and children who come from abusive homes. Kathy shares her home, spends her money and devotes many hours to helping others.
