10News honors Anna Nanigian and Alexandra Farella, Scripps Ranch High School students, for founding and operating the Bare Necessities Club. The Bare Necessities Club, started in December of 2005, raises daily essential supplies for the San Diego Rescue Mission, a non-profit and non-governmental organization that provides shelter and services to homeless people in downtown San Diego. Before Nanigian and Farella founded the club they had both been volunteering at the San Diego Rescue Mission for three years. The girls noticed that there was lack of necessary daily supplies such as; hygiene items, Tylenol, socks and others. Responding to the problem, they formed the club and named it after its purpose. The students are responsible for the overall success and operation of the club.Today, the Bare Necessities Club has more than 20 members. They all are high school students. Each week students organize lunch meetings to plan their fundraising activities. In less than a year, Bare Necessities Club raised $500. The money was used to buy necessary every day goods for the shelter.
Nanigian and Farella, along with other members of the club, continue to volunteer at Rescue Mission. Their donation efforts make it possible for the Rescue Mission to exist and be a better place of living for the communities’ homeless population. The Rescue Mission doesn’t get assistance from the government, and solely relies on private contributions. Because of people like Nanigian and Farella our community becomes a better place. For more information, please contact Ben Eisenstein at 619-920-2360.
