SR-67 Problems Down Due To Safety Measures

UPDATED: 6:29 pm PST November 10, 2009

A dangerous stretch of an East County highway has gotten safer, authorities told 10News.

According to authorities, 30 people have died in crashes on State Route 67 in the past six years, but none in the past six months.

Accidents and crashes are down dramatically as well. Since April, SR-67 has been a DUI Safety Corridor, where there has been increased enforcement and a number of other changes. One of the most noticeable changes is a requirement that drivers keep their headlights on 24 hours a day in a 12-mile stretch from Lakeside to Ramona. California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings said compliance has been good.

"There's some times I've worked patrol and you won't see a single car without its headlights on," said Pennings.

"It's fine with me, it's fine with my husband," said Carol Becker, who's lived in Ramona since 1955. "It's just taken a little time to get used to it."

In addition to the headlight requirement, Caltrans added signs telling drivers how fast they're going and rumble strips to alert them if they start to drift into oncoming traffic. Additionally, the CHP has added extra enforcement.

The combined results have been dramatic, authorities said. Accidents are down 30 percent from the previous two years, and DUI crashes are down 48 percent.
