Man Accused In Rancho Bernardo Apartment Death Speaks

Richard Saldivar Accused In Death Of Jennifer Jones

UPDATED: 6:20 pm PDT October 31, 2009

The man accused in the stabbing death of 28-year-old Jennifer Jones inside her Rancho Bernardo home said he is willing to take the blame for a murder he claims he did not commit.

"I didn't say I did it, but I told them I'll take it," Saldivar told 10News.

Jones was stabbed moments after she and her mother were talking on the phone, according to authorities. Before the call went dead, Jones' parents said a man's voice was heard in the background and then a struggle. Jones' mother told police the man had an accent.

Police caught up with Saldivar hours later and took him in for questioning. He was arrested several hours later on suspicion of murder.

"See, the bad thing is I don't even know if I'm the only person that has an accent in that area, but I never talked to that girl," said Saldivar.

Saldivar said he never told investigators he killed Jones, but said after hours of interrogation he decided he'd take the blame for it. He said at the time, he was exhausted because he hadn't taken his diabetes medication.

"I was still really upset, that when I was there … they just pushing, yelling me … you know … kind of like I was like on an emotional torture when I was there," Saldivar said.

At the time of Jones' death, Saldivar said he was home alone but never heard a scream. Shortly after, he said his wife picked him up and they left to get something to eat.

After speaking with Saldivar, 10News contacted his wife, Lorena. She said when she picked him up that day, he seemed completely normal. She also said he did not have any kind of relationship with Jones. She said he never talked to her and never killed her.

Investigators said they know Saldivar's motive and will make it public during a preliminary hearing on Nov. 9.
