Wave Of Vandalism Angers San Marcos Homeowners

POSTED: 6:20 pm PDT October 27, 2009
UPDATED: 5:33 pm PDT October 28, 2009

A new wave of vandalism has upset homeowners near San Marcos High School, 10News reported.

Eric Jansen lives adjacent to the campus located on West San Marcos Boulevard and has surveillance cameras trained on his house and yard. He said eight months ago he recorded video of a group of teenage boys throwing rocks at his camper. Four boys were identified from Jansen's video, and they were prosecuted in juvenile court and ordered to pay $5,300 restitution.

On Tuesday, Jansen said he pursued several kids from near his home, video camera in hand. He said he is not sure the kids did anything wrong but he has suspicions. He said it's possible this group of kids are the ones who often cross through his yard and knocked a brick loose as they jumped over the back wall of his home last week.

"I ran down around buildings to cut them off. They come out the same route," said Jansen.

Next-door neighbor Helga Mac Key said a rock was thrown through a rear bedroom window two weeks ago.

"The bed was full of glass. The floor was full of glass. It was shattered in a million pieces," said Mac Key.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is investigating Jansen's claim.

Jansen said he wants the school to post a guard at the corner.

The footage Jansen shot Tuesday of the kids running away is not proof that the group did anything wrong. However, if other surveillance video shows acts of vandalism and authorities are able to match identities, the case can proceed.
