SAN DIEGO -- A local man has built a home that is unlike any other in his Point Loma neighborhood and is being billed the "greenest home in San Diego.

However, 10News learned that Hal Brody's future dream home has turned into a nightmare for some of his neighbors.

The home is located on Sterne Street near Chatsworth Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue, one of the older neighborhoods in the Point Loma area. The street is lined with trees, and some of the homes date back to the 1940s. Many of the homes have been restored with attention to detail.

Broy has put up a steel frame for a "dome home" that he said will be really striking. However, neighbors told 10News they aren't sure that's a good thing.

Rob Tremaine looked at the construction and said, "I'm just shocked this structure is permitted in a charming neighborhood like this."

10News learned there are no covenants in the neighborhood and the house is being built to code, so it couldn't be stopped.

Brody argued that not everyone objects to his plan.

"The neighborhood is really behind me. A few people are afraid of what it's going to look like. Change is hard for everyone; I really understand that," said Brody.

He is particularly proud of the green aspect of the design, from his choice of building materials to energy savings. He expects his energy costs to be 80 percent to 90 percent less than the average home. Solar power will be used to heat the water, and photo-voltaic will provide the electricity.

"The radiant floor heating will save the most energy. Insulation behind the walls will be foam and an inch and a half will be put on the outside of the building," said Brody.

Some neighbors responded with a petition, "Mr. Brody, please go green but in a conventional manner!"

The house should be finished by next February or March, and Brody said he will live there and use it as a model home, building similar ones for customers who like the design and energy efficiency.
