SAN DIEGO -- Leaders from the Girls Club of San Diego spoke out Thursday following a 10News I-Team investigation that uncovered possible mismanagement of donations and allegations that its facility was being used for wild parties that involved underage drinking and sex.Girls Club President Clifton Blevins said, "All of that was out of context. All of that made the Girls Club look like it was some kind of horrible operation."Club leadership gathered Thursday to explain home video footage of the club allegedly being used as an after-hours nightclub.
In a previous I-Team report, witnesses said a huge party was thrown at the Girls Club facility, and when police showed up officers reported "alcohol is being served after hours and minors are being admitted." Additionally, officers said the party "is happening at the Girls Club" and "condoms and empty liquor bottles are found after the party."Blevins previously told the I-Team that even though thousands of dollars in donations and funding have gone unreported, the money has all gone toward Girls Club programming. The I-Team provided Blevins a chance to explain in its initial investigation, but on Wednesday Blevins announced that he would hold a press conference "to address the false accusations of TV's Channel Ten I-Team Investigation news team and set the record straight.""I want the people of San Diego to know the Girls Club is a citizen-based organization carrying out activities on behalf of young ladies to help them and become better people," Blevins said Thursday. While the Girls Club owns its building, the city of San Diego owns the land it is on.The lease for that land is expired and the San Diego City Attorney's Office said it won't be renewed.
