Parents Upset With Lack Of A/C At Mira Mesa School

Several parents in Mira Mesa kept their children home from school Wednesday because they said there is no air conditioning at their kids' school.

Parents told 10News the school district has not done enough to address the lack of air conditioning at Hage Elementary School.

On Wednesday, temperatures reached 97 degrees inside one classroom at Hage Elementary.

One student said, "It's hard to concentrate in the afternoon."

Another student told 10News, "I'm sweaty and get kind of crabby."

The school has never had air conditioning, and many parents have had enough.

It was so hot Wednesday that one mother picked up her two boys from school early.

"Parents and teachers do best they can keep to it dark …," said parent Wendy Merila.

Kids said teachers turn off the lights, keep cool water around and try to keep them out of the sun.

Jack Brandis of the San Diego Unified School District said he understands the concerns and admitted it is not a new issue.

"In the past, the Board of Education felt there were other priorities at schools that had to be dealt with," said Brandis

Last November, a bond measure was passed that will fund the installation of air conditioner units at San Diego schools including Hage.

A total of 117 of the 180 schools in the San Diego Unified School District are without air conditioning.

Sixty of those schools will receive units but not for another 8 to 10 years.
