Embattled Girls Club In Need Of Help To Survive

San Diego Non-Profit Credited For 50 Years Of Good Deeds Needs Help To Survive

Theodosia Ballard is a stand-out teacher at San Diego Unified School District -- honored by the county as teacher of the year -- and she credits the Girls Club of San Diego as the root of her determination and confidence.

"They just instilled in me, going to the Girls Club, the importance of learning," said Ballard, who teaches at Porter Elementary School. "There were just great opportunities there."

Now, the 10News I-Team finds the Girls Club of San Diego is in trouble. It sits on city property, and the city wants to end its 50-year lease, which came up for renewal in 2008. The club’s lease for the land had been $50 a year.

And as the I-Team reported last week, the director is attorney Clifton Blevins. We asked him why the group wasn’t filing required financial disclosure forms with the state.

"It does not have its 501(c)(3) active, but it's a non-profit organization," said Blevins.

The last filing -- for the year ending 2006 -- with the federal government shows the club raised $365,188. The I-Team asked what has happened to the club and the fundraising.

"There has been no money given to the Girls Club recently," said Blevins. "We haven’t solicited any money, we haven't received any money."

Blevins has been disciplined by the State Bar of California five times, once for not properly reporting and monitoring client trust accounts.

The I-Team was there when concerned community members began forming a new board to take over the Girls Club of San Diego operation.

Ballard hopes current and future generations of young women can benefit from the Girls Club as she did.

"You have an obligation and a responsibility to give the girls who come into the Girls Club opportunities, experiences -- they should be positive, they should have a safe haven," she said.

Community activist Dr. Carrol Waymon is the interim president of the new board that is trying to save the Girls Club of San Diego. Members have approached the City Attorney’s office to talk about the possibility of staying on the premises under the terms of the existing lease.
