SAN DIEGO -- Despite a recession, many California lawmakers in Sacramento are still receiving gifts from lobbyists and other interests, according to a report from The Sacramento Bee.The Sacramento Bee reported that during an 18-month period from January 2008 to June 2009, lawmakers received 12,000 gifts worth $833,000.Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the leading recipient, according to the report, with gifts totaling $21,000.
Local representatives received quite a few contributions as well, the report said. North County Assemblyman Martin Garrick was fifth on the list overall, with 143 gifts worth $9,400. Among Garrick's gifts were a trip to Disneyland, sporting events, concerts and dinners. Garrick's chief of staff, Mike Zimmerman, told 10News the gifts "absolutely do not" affect the assemblyman's votes."In the interest of transparency, we report everything," said Zimmerman. "The assemblyman goes to a lot of events and we report it even if he only has a glass of wine and a piece of cheese."Sen. Mark Wyland was 15th overall on the list, with 106 gifts totaling $6,100.The local legislator taking the fewest gifts during the 18-month period was Sen. Christine Kehoe, who accepted 42 gifts worth $2,200.To search through The Sacramento Bee's database, visit the newspaper's Web site.
