SAN DIEGO -- Chrysler announced plans Thursday to close nearly 800 auto dealerships nationwide, including dealerships in San Diego County. The decision comes on the heels of the automaker filing for bankruptcy late last month.Hine Pontiac Mazda Dodge in Mission Valley is on the list, but the closure of the Dodge portion does not mean the dealership is completely shutting its doors.
Some customers will still be able to receive Dodge service at the Mission Valley location, but there will be several changes."We saw it coming but we weren't sure that we would be on that list, so it was quite a shock," said Dave Miller of John Hine Pontiac Mazda Dodge.Chrysler's decision to close dealerships across the country affects 23 businesses in California. There are 14 Chrysler dealers in San Diego County, and of those only two will stop selling Chryslers: North County Jeep in Escondido and John Hine Dodge. Some Dodge customers like Douglas Porter wondered how this would affect his extended warranty."It's up in 2012 and I'd like to still bring it here until then," said Porter.Service on Dodge cars will continue at the dealership, and the government is backing Chrysler warranties. However, customers needing warranty work will soon have to go elsewhere."The warranties are still intact. Customers have no problem with their warranty. Once they cannot bring it here for warranty work they can take it to another Chrysler store," said Miller. The closures represent 25 percent of Chrysler's dealerships.Managers said it is a hard blow but are optimistic it will pay off for the company and customers."There's going to be fewer dealers but the products are going to have to be very competitive, and I think they're going to get more bang for their buck," said Miller.
