SAN DIEGO -- Chelsea King's death is the latest tragedy to galvanize the North County communities of Poway and Rancho Bernardo. The communities have experienced tragedy before, as they were devastated by the Witch Fire in 2007. Like then, residents said they will get through this latest incident together."We showed it after the fire, how our community can pull together and this is going to be another instance where our community pulls together," said former San Diego City Councilman Brian Maienschein.Rancho Bernardo resident and XX Sports Radio personality Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton said, "I think it really shows the potential of a community when there's trauma and tragedy, where they reach out and help a neighbor or somebody they don't even know."
During his radio show, Hamilton announced to his audience the discovery of King's body. His broadcast immediately changed from sports to community support."It was really hard doing sports talk radio yesterday because what we were talking about didn't a hill of beans in terms of importance compared to this story there on Lake Hodges," said Hamilton.Parents of Poway High School students said they've seen strength in the teenagers in the community. And like the fires, they said they'll get by King's death as a community."You never really want bad things to happen, but it's comforting to think to know, when they do occur, living in a community like this is a plus," said Poway resident Steve Meyer.
