SAN DIEGO -- Door-to-door they go, visiting hundreds of homes in Imperial Beach. These people are not selling anything. In fact, they're giving things away. The Methamphetamine Strike Force is spreading the word about the dangers of meth.
"Meth is such an insidious drug and it's a problem throughout San Diego County," said Greg Cox, chairman of the County Board of Supervisors.Several teams canvassed one of Imperial Beach's hot spots, where dozens of meth-related arrests have been made. The group is passing out fliers and magnets to anyone who will listen. The handouts contain phone numbers and Web sites where people could report meth use or ask for help themselves."Law enforcement can only do what citizens help them do," said Linda Bridgeman Smith of Health and Human Services. "The community needs to know that there is a resource available when they feel powerless."Recovering meth addict Adrian Cepeda said, "No, it's not easy. It's not easy at all."Powerless is what Cepeda said he felt when he hit rock bottom after using meth for 20 years."I lost everything: my house, my family, my children …," said Cepeda. He has been clean now for more than three months. On Tuesday, Cepeda reached out to others as part of the Methamphetamine Strike Force."It's a goal in my life to get in touch with my kids again," said Cepeda. It is a goal he could help others achieve by going door-to-door.
