Bike Sales On Rise As Gas Prices Increase

From the beach to downtown, the bicycle is experiencing a renaissance.

Many Californians have always loved their beach cruisers, but with ridiculous gas prices, residents apparently love them more than ever.

"We've been seeing a lot more of what we consider to be hybrids or commuter bicycles go out the door," said Jamie Henning of the Bicycle Warehouse in Pacific Beach.

Henning is living every business' dream -- he's having trouble keeping his store stocked with bicycles.

"With this particular type of bicycle, a commuting type of bicycle, the numbers are almost doubled from where they were last year," said Henning. "'I'm tired of gas prices' is really it."

Many are so tired they are paying between $500 and $800 for a new ride.

"And that $500, $800 you're going to recoup that over four, five months or so of not buying gas for your car," said Henning.

It's not just the bikes, as people are also purchasing more accessories to carry items between home and work.

"You can use it as a briefcase. Take it off when you need to go into your office," said Henning. "A lot of people have had these $3,000 to $4,000 bikes so they now are buying commuter-style tires and commuter rack systems to be able to go back and forth from work."

Meaning from the beach to downtown, Californians can love their bicycles a little more.
