SAN DIEGO -- Replacing grass with synthetic turf couldn't have come at a better time"This is something that the school's been trying to do for a number of years. This is the second day of the field-turf installation project here at Monte Vista High School. They just announced that we're going to a stage one drought," said Monte Vista High School Assistant Principal Dave Napoleon.A level one drought watch asks residents to voluntarily cut their own water use. The Otay Water District is the first in San Diego County to ask its customers to tighten the faucets.
"Take a look at your irrigation system, fix the leaks and replace sprinkler heads that aren't working properly. Also, set your timer," said Mark Watton of the Otay Water District.Water officials said if everyone decreased how much water they use, they can avoid the next drought level -- which could raise prices or restrict when you can water your lawn.Watton said, "We don't want to go there but that is something we have to consider."It is something Monte Vista High School has considered for years. With help from a grant from the Otay Water District, the school is ripping out its grass football field in favor of synthetic turf."We're talking about saving hundreds of thousands of gallons of water a year. You know, that really adds up," said Napoleon. The drought watch affects people living in Jamul, La Presa, Rancho San Diego, Spring Valley, eastern Chula Vista and Otay Mesa.
