San Diegans Express Concern About SDPD

SDPD Department Policies Endangering San Diegans?

POSTED: 2:47 pm PST December 14, 2005
UPDATED: 3:22 pm PST December 14, 2005

Officers inside the San Diego Police Department say San Diegans are being put at risk by department policies, 10News reported.

They say you can't always count on other officers when they're needed most. Not because they won't help but because there is no one to help.

Craig Myrom, a 26-year veteran of the SDPD, and a 10-year veteran who wants to remain anonymous, told 10News that their department is eroding.

"We don't have the manpower to get officers there in a timely manner," said the anonymous San Diego police officer.

"They may not get to see anyone in person at all," Myrom said.

In fact, according to multiple sources inside the police department, hundreds of officers have left the police department complaining of low pay, understaffing and a chief who won't listen.

Morale, according to the insiders, is at an all time low.

"I wouldn't judge this department from a couple of officers. I wouldn't judge this department from a few isolated cases," said police Chief Bill Lansdowne.

But some San Diegans are judging the SDPD.

A hit-and-run victim who wanted to be identified only as Ted said officers wanted him to drop his complaint.

"He actually discouraged me from calling an ambulance," Ted said.

Ted believes it was a move to avoid the need for a time-consuming police report.

According to 10News, Ted is not alone.

San Diegans have sent 10News complaints about the police department.

Isabelle G. told 10News no report was taken when her vehicle was broken into in North Park.

Vincent Z. from Clairemont said after his home was vandalized, officers said there "wasn't anything they (could) do."

James V. in City Heights asked the police to "stop talking everyone out of filing crime reports."

According to 10News, the two SDPD insiders are not surprised.

"Crime victims are getting short-changed," the anonymous officer told 10News.

"More and more every day, I hear from people that they are frustrated," Myrom said.
