UPDATED: 2:00 pm PDT October 6, 2005

New crime statistics on college campuses have been released and 10News investigative reporter Thom Jensen found out what's really happening on San Diego campuses.

Jensen broke down the statistics into four of the most common crimes at five San Diego campuses on a per capita basis.

He looked at sex offenses, auto thefts, burglaries and assaults and used the 2004 crime statistics from SDSU, UCSD, USD, Cal State San Marcos and Southwestern College.

For sex offenses, SDSU has the highest number per capita followed by USD, UCSD, Southwestern College and Cal State San Marcos.

SDSU is also the worst when it comes to auto theft, with UCSD not far behind. Southwestern College is third, followed by USD and Cal State San Marcos.

In the area of burglaries, UCSD leads with the highest number per capita. SDSU is second, followed by Southwestern College and Cal State San Marcos.

The assault rate at UCSD is also higher than any of the other four schools. SDSU has the second highest rate, then Southwestern College and USD. Cal State San Marcos reported no assaults last year.

So what is being done to slow the crime on campus? Many schools have video surveillance cameras scatttered across campus.

USD and SDSU have also installed hundreds of emergency phones throughout their properties.

Under the Clery Act, schools must publish an annual report disclosing campus security policies and three years worth of selected crime statistics.
