CORONADO, Calif. -- After Coronado voters voted down a proposal to spend another $2 million on a tunnel study, the city tunnel commission passed a resolution suggesting the Coronado City Council fund the project anyway."Are you trying to overturn what the people want?" 10News investigative reporter Mitch Blacher asked."We’re trying to say to the council that we have a serious problem that is not being addressed," said tunnel commission chairman Sut Clark.
Since 1998, taxpayers have spent more than $13 million on a study about how to build a tunnel under Coronado. The city needs another $2 million to finish the study and asked voters last week to give them the money.More than 4,500 people voted on June 8 and more than two-thirds voted to stop spending money on a tunnel to relieve traffic. The vote was only meant to advise the city council on its decision, but the council can continue to fund the tunnel study if it wants. However, the mayor says it is not likely."The fact that most people who voted don't want this study completed doesn't matter?" asked Blacher."I would say that's my view," said Clark.
