Local Assemblyman Faces Illegal Contributions Allegations

UPDATED: 6:40 am PST December 10, 2009

La Mesa Assemblyman Joel Anderson talked to the 10News I-Team about allegations of illegal campaign contributions.

Anderson was taking holiday pictures with supporters in his El Cajon office when the I-Team asked to speak to him about the allegations. However, a supporter declined to let the I-Team inside.

The Fair Political Practices Commission is investigating what they called "an unusual pattern of campaign contributions," and this includes allegations that Anderson’s supporters made contributions to the Fresno County Republican Central Committee, and then within days they donated similar amounts to Anderson.

According to the FPPC, the contributions were well in excess of the $3,900 amount candidates can legally accept from individuals.

Critics said Anderson was just trying to get around limits on campaign contributions.

On his way out of his office, Anderson agreed to speak to the I-Team about the allegations.

"Well, we're working really closely with the FPPC and they're going make a ruling on it later this week,” Anderson said. “We’re providing everything they asked for.”

The FPPC will make a ruling on its investigation on Thursday.

The state has already proposed fining Anderson $20,000, the I-Team learned.

Anderson is expected to run for the state Senate in 2010.
