SAN DIEGO -- A congressional field hearing took place in San Diego Monday with the focus of the meeting on the impact illegal immigration has on state and local governments. The witness testifying before the congressional leaders Monday focused on the cost that illegal immigration has on police, education and health care. Before entering any of the congressional hearings, the divide separating immigration reform can be seen and heard.
Testimony during Monday’s hearing included law enforcement.San Diego County Sheriff Bill Kolender used facts and figures saying illegal immigrants require a lot of department resources. The sheriff even cited the recent Horse Fire that started as a campfire set by an illegal immigrant.“The fire required as many as 75 deputies,” said Kolender. The hearing is one in a series, as Senate and House representatives remain deadlocked over immigration legislation. The House version makes it a felony to come into the U.S. illegally, while the Senate bill offers legalization for those already living in the country. “We want a pathway to legalization. We don’t want them in front. We want a line. Right now, there’s no line for them to get into,” said Enrique Morones of Border Angels.Protests outside the hearing went smoothly with no arrests.Border Angels brought thousands of crosses representing immigrants who have died coming in to the U.S.A group of Minutemen also used a cross to symbolize Americans killed by illegal immigrants.Pro-immigration supporters have been holding their own news conferences, questioning the need for the hearings.“There is no new information presented and no public testimony allowed. Another hearing is not what we need in California,” said Melissa Daar of People For The American Way.County supervisor Bill Horn disagreed, saying the federal government needs to take action.“I agreed if a child is here, they ought to be educated and they ought to have health care. The problem is we have no control over this border,” said Horn. The hearings have been taking place across the U.S.Four hearings have already been held in San Diego alone. The next hearing will be held in Georgia on Tuesday.
