The neighborhood of City Heights has been chosen for a new, affordable, 150-unit housing complex for seniors, 10News reported.

"We have to make it a priority to get the affordability in many, many projects. It's important that we stay focused on that because we have not met the senior housing need in this city," City Councilwoman and Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins said.

Aktins said the new senior center is patterned after the Potiker Center in downtown San Diego.

Paul Downey, president and CEO for Senior Community Centers, said the Potiker Center has been recognized nationally.

"This is almost the gold standard for what affordable housing should be. We have affordable rents, plus, we have supportive sevices which are critical to senoirs being able to function and to survive and to flourish," Downey said.

The new City Heights Senior Center is scheduled to open in the spring of 2007.
