CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The Unified Port of San Diego announced Tuesday morning when the South Bay Power Plant is scheduled to be imploded.
The plant's implosion on Chula Vista’s Bayfront is set for Feb. 2 at 7 a.m., weather permitting. This ends the storied history of the gigantic plant, which first started generating power for Southern California in 1960. It was decommissioned at end of 2011.
Since then, demolition crews have removed close to 24,000 tons of recyclable material including copper, steel, and aluminum. The remaining super structure will be imploded. It will be the first implosion in San Diego County since the Hotel San Diego was brought down with explosives in 2006.
The final removal of the South Bay Power Plant clears the path for Chula Vista’s elaborate 550-acre Bayfront Master Plan, which will include shopping, restaurants, homes, park and open space, and a hotel resort and convention center. Parts of the 150-acre area currently occupied by the power plant will be developed while the other parts are returned to a natural habitat.
