SAN DIEGO - A fire of unknown origin damaged six units in a three-story City Heights apartment building Friday afternoon, leaving 14 residents in need of emergency housing.

The blaze in the 3400 block of 36th Street, near the intersection of Interstate 805 and state Route 15, broke out about 4:15 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Crews had the flames under control within 15 minutes, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the 13 adults and one child displaced by the blaze arrange for interim lodging.

No injuries were reported, but several cats owned by residents of the complex remained unaccounted for in the early evening, Luque said.

The cause of the fire, which erupted in a second-floor residence, was under investigation.
