While new treatments are offering new hope for women, one local plastic surgeon believes that breast cancer patients and survivors need more than surgery and chemotherapy. They need someplace to go for relaxation and support.

That's why one evening a month, SK Sanctuary -- a La Jolla day spa -- opens its doors free of charge for patients and survivors of breast cancer.

"We named it SK Sanctuary because it is a sanctuary and it's perfect for breast cancer patients because we want it to be their sanctuary for them to be able to come and feel good about themselves," plastic surgeon Dr. Stephen Krant told 10News.

Breast cancer survivor Jan Jacque nearly turned down an invitation to the spa. She didn't think she could afford it.

"I was trying to decline gracefully and the lady said that it's complimentary. 'Come on down ? you can have anything you want.' I was stunned. I said great, I'll be right there," Jacque told 10News.

According to 10News, every cancer patient gets VIP treatment from the staff.

"They just need time to themselves, where they're comfortable. And if they've had surgery, they know that on cancer night everybody who comes here has experienced it or they are experiencing it," spa director Kelly Costa said.

According to 10News, the special evenings for breast cancer patients and survivors include spa services, relaxation and yoga classes, healthy snacks, support groups and special guest speakers.
