SAN DIEGO -- Waiting at the pharmacy for your prescription to be filled may become a thing of the past.A local doctor's office is among the first in the country to fill your prescription on the spot, reported 10News.With the help of an ATM-like vending machine, dispensing drugs is quick, easy and free.Michael Corrigan had a little accident while hiking recently when he fell and broke the fall with his hand.No broken bones, but Corrigan's doctor prescribed an antibiotic to prevent infection in the wound. But Corrigan didn't have to make a trip to the pharmacy. The nurse dispensed his medication right at the office, a full prescription, free of charge from an ATM-like sample machine.San Diego-based MEDVANTX is hoping this first-of-its-kind program will not only help combat growing health care costs, but also help promote the use of generic drugs. And you can't beat the price as the medication is free to the patient, reported 10News.Patients benefit because it's one-stop shopping. The doctor chooses from 20 generic drugs. The door pops open and a full course or one month's supply of a generic medication is dispensed. The new generic drug delivery system is available only at North Coast Family Group, but is expected to expand with more locations and more than the 20 medications currently available.Medicine can only be dispensed when a patient is seen in the office.
