Dental Device Eats Away At Migraines

Low-Tech Device Helps Ease Migraines

POSTED: 3:58 pm PST February 9, 2005

A tiny dental device is working miracles for people who suffer from migraine headaches, 10News reported.

Jennifer Gottesman lived in misery for almost seven years because of migraines.

"I had one migraine that lasted 14 days," Gottesman said.

She tried every type of medication and has undergone every test. She saw five doctors, had an MRI and a computerized tomography scan, but nothing helped.

Many people are finding relief the low-tech way with a tiny device that fits right over your teeth, 10News reported.

"This NTI device is the like dimmer switch on nerve activity at night which makes the migraines less triggerable during the day," said Dr. Jim Boyd, the dentist who invented the device.

The one-inch, custom-fitted night guard snaps onto your two front teeth and prevents your back teeth from clenching during sleep -- that clenching is considered a significant trigger for migraine headaches.

"Their top teeth will hit (the) device and prevent the clenching and intensity from achieving high levels," explained Boyd.

When you clench your back teeth, it excites the muscles around your temples.

Boyd said the dental device is FDA-approved.

Gottesman found relief from migraines within weeks of wearing the device.

"It's been about a year and a half since I have had a serious migraine," Gottesman said.

The device costs about $600 and is covered by medical insurance for migraine treatment.

You may be able to get one through your dentist or you can call the Headache Center of Southern California in Encinitas at (760) 631-3000.
