SAN DIEGO -- A revolutionary lens implant is helping San Diego-area cataract patients see clearly without glasses, 10News reported. Now that a cataract no longer clouds her left eye, Cheryl Hollenbeck is able to enjoy reading.Hollenbeck said, "It was almost like I had a film over the eye."Thanks to a lens implant she received five weeks ago, the film is gone and now Hollenbeck is preparing to have a lens implant in her right eye.According to Dr. James Davies, an eye surgeon, Hollenbeck is getting an all new, state-of-the-art Crystalens. The lens is made of silicone and allows part of the lens to flex and works naturally with the eye's muscle. Tiny hinges allows the lens to move and focus on objects at all distances."What the Crystalens offers is seamless vision," Davies said. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and then the eyes are dilated for about one week."That gives the lens a chance to fixate where we want it to and that's why it'll work," Davies explained. If the results from her first procedure are any indication, Hollenbeck will soon be back to reading fine print."I'm starting to read before I go to bed. I wasn't able to do that for a long time," Hollenbeck told 10News.Crystalens is available through 50 doctors nationwide.Davies is currently the only eye surgeon performing the procedure in San Diego. It is important to note that Crystalens is not yet covered by insurance.
