Some 2,000 men and women set out Friday to walk 60 miles over three days as part of the fight against breast cancer.

The walkers will be raising money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs and for a National Philanthropic Trust special breast cancer fund.

Friday's stretch of the walk began at 7:30 a.m. at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and ends around 7 p.m. at Miramar College, where walkers will set up tents, eat dinner, relax and prepare for a second day of walking.

On Saturday, the walk resumes around 7 a.m. at Miramar College's Hourglass Field and stops about 12 hours later at Mission Bay Park.

Sunday will find the walkers leaving Mission Bay Park's Vacation Isle at 7 a.m. and completing the walk at 4 p.m. at Embarcadero Marina South.

More than 200,000 women and men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, according to the Komen Foundation, and 40,000 people die annually from the disease.

Breast cancer survivor Pam Garner will be participating in the walk.

"I was diagnosed in August 2002 with breast cancer, two weeks before my husband was scheduled for a bone marrow transplant," Garner said.

Garner received chemotherapy, but put off her surgery for months so she could care for her ailing husband.

Once he was well, she underwent a mastectomy.

"I finished the radiation in May 2003, and here I am, getting ready to do the walk," Garner said.

Since March, Garner has been training to make the 60-mile odyssey through San Diego.

"When I first got back into walking after my treatments, I could barely go around the block," she said.

Garner said she walks with a purpose now and is gaining stamina.

"The most I have walked in my training is 15 miles. I have done several 13 and 14 miles on a Saturday and on a Sunday another 10 or 11," Garner said.

"I think it's going to be an awesome experience," she added.

10News anchorwoman Carol LeBeau will be following Garner's journey and others taking part in the three-day walk through San Diego.
