Fertility Journey: Couple Awaits Treatment Results

Boeses Try One Last Time To Have Child

Making a baby is not easy for some couples, including San Diegans Stephanie and Austin Boes.

The Boeses are considered an all-American couple chasing the all-American dream of starting a family together.

The couple is in their mid-30s and has been trying to start a family for more than 15 years.

"It's stressful emotionally, especially for Stephanie because she has just a maternal instinct. (To Stephanie) I think you wanted to have kids… Probably all of your life,” said Austin Boes.

Frustrated, the couple turned to Dr. Samuel Wood, an expert in fertility.

Wood said, “They should have a family of five or six by now.”

10News first met the couple last November as they began last chance fertility treatment, but it was not successful.

"I took a test yesterday and it came out negative,” said Stephanie Boes.

For Stephanie, the news was tough to take.

"I am just done with the medication, I am just done with the injections, I am just at the end. It's just game over,” said Stephanie.

However, Austin did not lose hope.

"I don't want you to give up because we have gone through so much. It's like the last little bit of the race, I just want you to cross that finish line," said Austin.

Three months later, Stephanie changed her mind. Austin and Wood have convinced her they should push for the finish line, together.

Wood said, “After she failed in her previous cycle, we said we are pulling out all the stops and we have actually put together an entirely new protocol for people who have failed before.”

This time, Wood tries something different. He uses an experimental method to make sure embryos implant in Stephanie’s uterus.

Two weeks later, Stephanie and Austin find out if the last chance treatment worked.

"Are you ready? Are you sitting down? See the positive there? Oh yes, the big plus, plus sign there congratulations,” Wood tells the couple.

Stephanie is pregnant, but her reaction is subdued. She is not doing any celebrating just yet.

“It's a great shock, but I am still so hesitant,” said Stephanie.

Austin said, "I have had a feeling the whole time that it would be a success. As it is, I am just hoping she will finally get it in her head and it will sink in. Right now, I am in sort of a cloud.”

The couple still faces more anxious moments.

"This next two weeks is a time where you don't know what's happening and the next big moment is certainly the ultrasound,” said Wood.

That first look inside Stephanie’s uterus will reveal if the developing fetus has a heartbeat and whether there is more than one baby.

“Her hormone numbers suggest one or two, but I'll tell you, you never know until you look in and see,” said Wood.
