SAN DIEGO -- Stephanie and Austin Boes want a baby. So much so, they've undergone fertility treatments for years. It hasn't worked, so far.But they're excited and optimistic, thanks to a doctor and improved medical procedures. It's been a week since the Boes learned some good news -- Stephanie may be able to carry a child."This is it. We are looking at it as this is the day we are going to conceive," said Stephanie. They have returned to fertility specialist Dr. Samuel Wood's office where Stephanie's eggs will be retrieved and fertilized with Austin's sperm."I have been trying to talk to Stephanie and keep her calm," said Austin.Wood and his embryologist carefully retrieved eggs from Stephanie's uterus. The microscopic eggs were emptied from the syringe and put into a petri dish."Everything went very well. We actually got 10 eggs," said Wood.In the next few days, the eggs will be fertilized in the lab and become embryos."About 24 hours from now, we'll call them and let them know how many fertilized. So, that's our next hurdle -- we want to know how many embryos we have to work with," said Wood.Normally, the embryos would be implanted a few days after the retrieval, but Wood discovered a problem with Stephanie's hormone levels -- one particular hormone was too high."It may be that is why she hasn't become pregnant throughout all these years," said Wood.It means Stephanie's body is not ready yet to make a baby."It won't give the right kind of nutrients. It won't provide the right kind of environment for the embryo," said Wood. The embryos will be put in a deep freeze for six weeks, allowing Stephanie's body time to prepare for her uncertain journey into fertility. It's a setback for the couple, but they said they continue to have faith.Tuesday on 10News Live at 5 p.m. the long wait is over for the couple. You'll see if Wood's strategy will bring a baby to Stephanie and Austin.
