SAN DIEGO -- They are young, healthy and deeply in love, but Austin and Stephanie Boes have not been able to reach their American dream -- starting a family. But they are trying, and they have invited 10News along to see firsthand their journey to fertility. The Boes said they are on a roller coaster ride of uncertainty."We got a lot riding on it emotionally because this is my last time. I can't go any further than this," said Stephanie.Mentally exhausted, the couple has tried for 15 years to have a baby."We have been together since 1988. We met in high school," said Austin.Family and friends have offered their solutions, telling the couple to relax or eat more red meat.Stephanie and Austin said they are very frustrated and puzzled."It's stressful emotionally, especially for Stephanie because she has just a maternal instinct," said Austin. It's a puzzle for fertility specialist Samuel Wood, who said in vitro fertilization hasn't helped them conceive."In each case, the eggs looked great, the sperm looked great, the embryos looked fine, but they didn't get pregnant," said Wood. Now, after a three-year break from doctors, drugs and shots, Austin and Stephanie want to try one last time."In the last three years, we have learned a lot more about how to make in vitro work," said Wood. Wood said he is confident some subtle changes will make all the difference."We have some secret little tricks to try and get the embryos into just the right place in the uterus and hopefully the combination of all those things will be effective," said Wood.Stephanie will learn if all those painful weeks of injections she has been giving herself have stimulated her ovaries. The sonogram revealed some encouraging news.Wood told Stephanie she had six follicles on each side of her ovaries, which is very close to what she had last time. This means Stephanie has a good chance of becoming pregnant."I am encouraged more so this time," said Austin. It's the first step of their long journey. On 10News Live at 5 p.m. Monday, 10News will continue to follow Stephanie and Austin.Wood discovers a new clue that could explain why the couple hasn't been able to conceive in the past.
