POWAY, Calif. -- Officials Thursday reopened the 2,100-acre Sycamore Canyon/Goodan Ranch and nine miles of trails in the open-space preserve that were devastated by last October's wildfires. The park, between Poway and Santee, was closed more than nine months ago after being completely burned during the Cedar Fire. Some of the park's facilities will remain closed until they can be rebuilt. "We lost some of our precious historic resources in that fire," San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said during Thursday's ceremony. "Some things you can never get back. The only thing you can do is move forward. So today, we are creating a new memory for the history books."
Others on hand for the reopening included Paul Jacks, deputy director of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services; elected officials from Poway and Santee; and representatives from the state Department of Fish and Game. Still closed because of the wildfires are the county's El Capitan Open Space Preserve in Lakeside, Mount Grower Open Space Preserve in Ramona, Oakoasis Open Space Preserve in Lakeside, and Simon Open Space Preserve in Ramona.
