The San Diego City Council accepted Tuesday a $50,000 donation from Wal-Mart to buy breathing equipment for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The money will be used to acquire rapid intervention crew kits, devices equipped with a one-hour air supply, which aid firefighters in performing rescues.

"Protecting our citizens is vital, but we must also equip our firefighters to protect themselves," said San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy.

Wal-Mart has donated about $750,000 to the region for fire protection since the October wildfires, Murphy said.
