Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered increased fire response help for six Southern California counties, including San Diego, during the 2004 season, it was announced Monday.

The announcement was made by California Secretary of Resources Mike Chrisman at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Hemet/Ryan Helitack and Air Attack Base in Riverside County.

The governor also proclaimed it "Wildfire Awareness Week."

"Governor Schwarzenegger is augmenting firefighting resources and has ordered CDF to secure and deploy additional resources to protect the safety of people and property from wildfires," Chrisman said.

The governor's executive order directs state agencies to assign four firefighters to CDF engines in Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties.

Additional resources will be provided to Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange counties based on established fire threat conditions.

The governor's order also provides for 10 refurbished fire engines to be redeployed to increase resources in San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties and calls for four additional CDF Conservation Camp Fire Crews in Southern California.

In addition, the governor ordered the acceleration of clearance inspections, fire prevention public education, the processing of federal contracts and grants to local communities, and pre-deployment of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services fire engine strike teams.

The governor also directed the California National Guard to prepare its aircraft and helicopters and assign level-one inmates to staff Conservation Camp Fire Crews.

The CDF and OES were also ordered to work closely with federal, state and local government agencies, bordering states and the government of Mexico to maximize California's fire prevention and fighting capabilities.
