SAN DIEGO -- Workers are scheduled Tuesday to begin rebuilding 26 of the 39 tribal homes that burned on the Barona Indian Reservation during the recent wildfires.
"Our goal is just to get people back in their homes," tribal spokesman David Baron told The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The Barona tribal government is funding the reconstruction project, although recipients will be required to make monthly payments to cover the tribe's costs, Baron told the newspaper.
Tribal members who had insurance or federal relocation funding would use that for repayments, Baron told the Union-Tribune. The construction costs or monthly payment amounts were not disclosed.
An insurance industry spokesman told the newspaper that contractors in San Diego County have been quoting home rebuilding costs ranging from $85 per square foot to $200 per square foot.
Barona is one of three local tribes that sustained major losses of homes in the wildfires, and the first to rebuild.
Unlike fire-ravaged communities in the city of San Diego or the county, Barona didn't have to wait for a lengthy permitting process.
The only delays, Baron told the Union-Tribune, were for cleanup, architectural planning and engineering work.
The 26 replacement homes will be built simultaneously, with completion expected by April, Baron said.
