Does Reading Celeb Blogs Hurt Anyone?

POSTED: 5:44 am PDT May 17, 2007

Some people consume packs of cigarettes throughout the day. Others binge on diet soda or bite their nails.

My addiction is not a health or beauty risk, but I need to stop -- because I don't think I can.

I'm a celebrity gossip junkie. I meet deadlines and expectations at work, but I cannot live without my daily fix.

Dlisted.com, Perezhilton.com, pinkisthenewblog.com, justjared.com, socialitelife.com and thesuperficial.com -- just a few of the many blogs I visit throughout the day.

Growing up, it was all about People magazine, and even US. I actually had to spend money and time picking out the issue with the juiciest details.

But today a gossipmongering high is all too easy to come by. There are bloggers who update their sites often enough that I do not have to wait more than a few minutes for a new scandal or tantalizing tidbit.

I'm so hooked and spoiled that I feel cheated when my favorite sites have old information.

After I've seen Britney's latest wig, I don't want to see it again on five other sites. Boring Brangelina in the same outfits is tiresome; I want something new. I am constantly looking for and finding new sites to supplement my staple.

People in my life enable my habit, feeding me new URLs and encouraging conversations about starlets as if they are our friends.

I'm dazzled by the star thing because I always had that itch to be famous, to be the pouty actress who complains about how the paparazzi are ruining her life while setting up photo ops to promote her latest movie.

But I feel bad that I'm enjoying other people's misery, no matter how false it might be, while critiquing their fashion choices with my best friend. The papparazzi do go too far on many occasions, and it's sad to see how invasive the industry can be.

I'm not a stalker type; I never even comment on the blogs and would never send a fan letter to anyone. I'm just fascinated by the ups and downs of the star lifestyle.

They are strangers who I will never meet or know in real life. And yet I can't get enough of them.

So what's wrong with surfing for celebrity gossip? Who am I really hurting?

Other than my eyes being strained from the computer screen, nobody. The celebs can take care of themselves with hefty lawsuits and movie deals.

But the fact that I can't help but look makes me think maybe I should give it up for awhile. I won't miss anything vital.

Do I really care what Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's daughter wears to her first birthday party? Does it really matter that Reese Witherspoon is-but-isn't dating Jake Gyllenhall? So what if Cameron and Justin broke up? Is Tom Cruise recruiting more Scientologists? If Paris goes to jail, will it matter?

None of it matters.

My friend Lori -- who also takes pride in knowing the latest on JLo's happy-yet-unhappy marriage and having first dibs on Anna Nicole Smith's autopsy report -- has made a pact to only check these sites at night when she's at home.

It's about time for me to try the same.

As much as I enjoy this silly pastime, to break the habit I need to go cold turkey.

Perhaps I can take this time to work on finding my own fame, rather than relishing in others'.
