‘Money on My Mind': Spotify's most popular cash-themed songs

Money may be the root of all evil, but it’s also been the root of some really great songs.

Today is National Dollar Day, an annual holiday that falls on Aug. 8. According to history, Friday marked 138 years since the United States monetary system was established by the Continental Congress.

In honor of National Dollar Day, we reached out to the folks at Spotify to compile the most popular money-themed songs according to their users’ listening habits. The top 15 is mostly stocked with recent artists like Sam Smith, Aloe Blacc and Miley Cyrus — but a few classic acts made the list including Pink Floyd and Dire Straits.

Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money Mo Problems,” released in 1997, is the most popular track released before 2010. According to the service’s users, Lana Del Rey is the reigning queen of money tunes, with three songs on the list.

Here’s the complete list, which Spotify’s researchers promise will, “keep you motivated through to your next payday.”
