Jesse Eisenberg to play Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons to portray Alfred in Superman/Batman film

BURBANK, Calif. - Oscar winner Jeremy Irons will take on the role of Bruce Wayne's butler/confidante Alfred in the upcoming Superman/Batman film, while Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg will portray Superman's archenemy, Lex Luthor, Warner Bros. announced Friday.

The film, which is still untitled and is not scheduled for release until May 2016, has been generating plenty of buzz, particularly after the casting of Ben Affleck in the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne -- drawing plenty of mixed social media reaction.

Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman/Clark Kent from "Man of Steel," while Gal Gadot will portray Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.

"Man of Steel" co-stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are also slated to return. Zack Snyder, best known for "300," will direct.

Eisenberg was nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in "The Social Network." Snyder said Eisenberg will bring new dimensions to the character of Lex Luthor, whose "intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman."

Snyder called it an "honor to have such an amazing seasoned and gifted actor" as Irons portraying Alfred, who is Bruce Wayne's "most trusted friend, ally and mentor." Irons won an Oscar for his work in "Reversal of Fortune."
