'Iron Man 3' zooms past box office foes

Film has 2nd-biggest weekend opening ever

LOS ANGELES - "Iron Man 3" had the second-highest weekend box office opening in Hollywood history, raking in more than $174.1 million in theaters in the U.S. and Canada, according to final figures released Monday.

The studio released "Iron Man 3" in North America 12 days after the third film in the franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. made its debut elsewhere in the world. "Iron Man 3" has globally grossed more than $679 million so far, according to Hollywood.com.

"Pain & Gain" was in second place over the weekend, taking in $7.51 million to bring its two-week gross to $33.83 million.

"42" was in third place with $6.05 million, bringing its four-week total to $78.18 million.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this week were "Oblivion" ($5.64 million), "The Croods" ($4.2 million),"The Big Wedding" ($3.88 million), "Mud" ($2.16 million),"Oz The Great And Powerful" ($2.11 million),"Scary Movie 5" ($1.44 million) and "The Place Beyond The Pines" ($1.28 million).
