'Guardians of the Galaxy' dominates weekend box office with $94.3M

LOS ANGELES - The superhero fantasy "Guardians of the Galaxy" easily dominated North American theaters over the weekend, according to final figures released Monday.

"Guardians" debuted in first place at the box office, collecting $94.3 million between Friday and Sunday, according Rentrak.

The psychological thriller "Lucy" took second place with $18.2 million, while the James Brown biopic "Get On Up" debuted in third place with $13.6 million.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's "Hercules" landed in fourth place with $11 million, while "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" continued to pad its box office figures, earning $8.7 million over the weekend to bring its four-week total to $189.3 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were "Planes: Fire & Rescue" ($6 million); "The Purge: Anarchy" ($5.8 million); "Sex Tape" ($3.5 million); "And So It Goes" ($3.3 million); and "A Most Wanted Man" ($3.2 million).
