Visitors swim with sharks at Tacoma zoo

Zoo hopes to give sharks' fierce image a makeover

TACOMA, Wash. - For people who think swimming with sharks could be fun, a Tacoma, Washington zoo is making their dream a reality.

On Friday, The Eye-to-Eye Shark Dive at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium opened, allowing people to get wet with six species of sharks.

Scuba dives cost $160 for zoo members and cage dives cost $50.

Zoo officials say they hope to give the sharks' fearsome image a makeover.

Assistant dive officer Heidi Wilken says sharks deserve "caring and protection."

Nearly 400 people have made reservations.

Kayla Plummer-Backus wrangled the first dive for herself, her best friend and their boyfriends. She tells the News Tribune she's been counting the days until her shark swim.
