Los Angeles man wins $1M playing fantasy football

LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles man is $1 million richer Tuesday as the winner of DraftKings Inc.'s $1 million grand prize in its Fantasy Football Millionaire final.

James Tran will get the biggest part of the $3.1 million prize pool. Runner-up Alan Zeidenfeld, also a Los Angeles resident, won $350,000, according to DraftKings.

Tran and Zeidenfeld were the top contestants out of thousands of players nationwide who participated. The win was determined by Monday night's NFL game when the San Francisco 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-24.

Tran, an actuary for a reinsurance company, ultimately won by less than one point. The father of two, who started playing daily fantasy sports three years ago, plans to use his winnings to pay off his mortgage, take a vacation and give to charity.

"Congratulations to James for his million-dollar win, and congratulations to Al for winning the runner-up prize of $350,000. Both had an unbelievable showing, and it was just amazing to watch this come down to the final plays of Monday Night Football," said Jason Robins, chief executive of Boston-based DraftKings, which claims more than a million users across its mobile and online properties.
